Sara g. Kielly

Sara Kielly is a 33-year-old, Irish-American transgender woman incarcerated at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in New York, and has been working on completing her memoir, "Cradle of a Firebrand - A Transgender Woman's Journey to Survival and Self-Affirmation in a Men's Maximum Security Prison", as a member of ABCA.

She has been previously published by the New York Daily News, Sylvia Rivera Law Project, and the National Lawyers' Guild. Her poetry has appeared in Correction Beyond Corrections, a book of poetry published by the Prisoners' Legal Services of NY. She currently writes an opinion column for the LGBTQ+ newsletter, What's The Tea. Currently her unpublished works include a collection of poems titled, On The Edge of Love; a Zuihitsu poetry chapbook about the effects of war on soldiers and their loved ones titled, Love Valerie; several courtroom drama short stories; and a flash fiction story titled, "Life beyond the Palisades."

Sara is a passionate LGBTQ+ and prisoners' rights activist, and jailhouse lawyer who has successfully litigated numerous legal actions in state and federal court. She has helped to expand the right of LGBTQ+ prisoners in NYS to gender affirming care and housing. She is working towards her Bachelor's degree in "Politics and Human Rights" as a freshman at Marymount Manhattan College through the Bedford Hills College Program, and plans to attend law school upon release with the dream of becoming a law professor.

In 2023, Sara was one of 16 writers selected to receive a grant from the Ridgeway Reporting Project for Incarcerated Journalists, administered by Solitary Watch. Sara will be reporting on changes made in New York’s largest women’s prison since the HALT Solitary Confinement Law, as well as resistance to its implementation. Through this grant, Sara has an ongoing investigative journalist position with Solitary Watch and Empowerment Avenue. Read more about this project here.
